Tom Colquhoun Solo Guitar – a compilation of early works all performed on two guitars simultaneously with no overdubs.
Tom Colquhoun.
Tom Colquhoun is a self-taught Scottish guitarist based in Glasgow who has been playing since the age of 8. In his teens he developed his own unique style of playing two guitars simultaneously with both instruments sitting upright on a stand of his own design, the two guitars being played predominantly using the technique of 'tapping'. The style allows for great versatility with one hand/guitar playing chords and bass and the other hand free to play melody and lead lines. On his recordings you can clearly hear two distinct and separate guitar parts-these are recorded live with no other musicians or overdubs. This, however, is just one of many techniques Tom Colquhoun employs either in playing two guitars or one guitar to expand the range of possibilities for guiitar music.
Influences.
Early inspirations included Jimmy Page, Steve Howe, John Goodsall, and a wide variety of Jazz and rock musicians. Later the diverse styles of Adrian Legg, Stanley Jordan, Joe Pass and John McLaughlin were a major influence. Most influential though were classical guitarists such as Julian Bream, Vladimir Mikulka, Ricardo Iznaola, and Kazuhito Yamashita.
A Tom Colquhoun live performance will typically include a wide range of genres ranging from Joni Mitchell, John Coltrane to Jacques Brel – or compositions inspired by composers such as Ligeti, Messiaen or Steve Reich.
